Gratitude Builds Mental Strength and Willpower

Actor Laura Harring has starred in many award-winning films and worked with stars such as Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker. With a diverse career spanning over 30 years, Laura Harring likes to share her wisdom and knowledge she learned from her social working days in India, and her extensive travel to unique cultures worldwide. Harring traveled the world a few times, sometimes backpacking and doing manual labor work. Laura Harring believes that when one expands their perception, to include other people’s beliefs and traditions, we become more tolerant, grateful and therefore happier and more able to perceive our own blessings, which brings us back to gratitude for the gift of life.

Strongly interested in the health of the mind, body, and spirit, Laura Harring is a firm believer in the power of gratitude. Gratitude increases mental strength. This increased mental strength and resilience, helps people overcome difficult times and avoid impulsive decisions. And research supports this.

A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 2003 showed a positive correlation between gratitude and resilience in the days following 9/11. Another study done in 2006 showed that grateful Vietnam veterans were better able to cope with post-traumatic stress.

A study conducted by Northeastern University showed that people who were grateful for the little things, were more patient and able to make better decisions. In this study, students had to choose between receiving a small sum of money now or a larger sum in the future. Results showed that students who expressed more gratitude in their daily lives, were more likely to wait for a larger reward. And that’s not all. The benefits of improved resilience and willpower, go beyond financial decision making. Stronger impulse can help with the discipline required to break bad habits and switch them out for good habits. Since discovering how helpful it is to people’s lives, Laura Harring started sharing gratitude and wisdom from her travels to the East and West on her social media pages.
