Winning “Best Cast” for A Family in Crisis: The Elian Gonzales Story

Laura Harring is a classically trained Hollywood actor who has taken on leading roles in acclaimed films, such as The King opposite Oscar winner William Hurt and David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, which was recently voted The Best Film of the 21st Century. Mulholland Drive is often called a masterpiece, thanks in part to Laura Harring’s strong presence in a character that does not apologize for her sensuality. The role won Laura Harring an Alma Award for Outstanding Actress and over the course of her career, Laura Harring has earned numerous awards, including another Alma Award for Best Cast in, A Family in Crisis: The Elian Gonzales Story. In the movie, Laura Harring portrays Marisleysis Gonzalez, Elian’s cousin and primary caregiver.

Based on true events, the television movie depicts the story of a Cuban boy who, at age 5, was the only survivor of a boat of refugees that sunk in a storm. Adrift in the ocean for two days, Elian survived by clutching a rubber inner tube. After the boy is placed in the temporary custody of a great uncle who lives in Miami, a battle erupts between him and the boy's father, a Cuban loyalist unaware of his former wife’s plans to defect.

Vowing never to allow the young boy to return to Cuba, the uncle petitioned for permanent custody of Elian. The film was lauded as an accurate portrayal of a challenging international situation.
